Fisher the Dragon

Pencil Sketch colored in Photoshop - January 2008
Nothing to thrilling, just a character design that I quickly worked up, as I wanted to see how he would look as a dragon with this color style more then anything.

My next art with this character should be a little more exciting.

Splash On Fire

Sketch Colored in Photoshop - Spring 2007

More illustration photomanipulation goodness in Photoshop (again, this isn't really art). This doesn't really show much in the way of oohs and ahhs, but what I got from it was the technique in dealing with masks and layers. Its a different coloring technique then I usually use, and it works rather well when you change your mind about different colors.

Case in point, the pitch blackness I depicted above is actually the removal of the body color, which I can show in any color I want, such as different shades of grey or reds.

Ok, now we might be getting a little ridiculous.

On a Grulla Stallion

Sketch Colored in Photoshop - 2006

Is that Draco Malfoy riding a unicorn?

No it's not, dad nab it!

No, this is not art, it's illustration (and truthfully, one of my weak areas) but this was an image I did where I tried something different with the coloring and used masks instead of just layers.

As for the subject, well, this is an event I pictured in my head of a scene in one of my stories. The male character goes by Melvin (or perhaps Wyatt) at this stage, and the fact that he's in a business suit is another long story. The unicorn in question doesn't usually allow riders, but he'll make an exception for Melvin.

It's rather long and won't make much sense, so just enjoy the picture.

Ink on Bristol Board - 1995

This was a Freshman Year homework assignment, I didn't deal much with ink before this so it came out rather well.

Dodger in Pencil

Pencil - 2006

Another little sketch I did that I managed to scan and put on the internets. This is a picture of my horse, Dodger, where I took a picture and sketched it. I screwed up his eye and put it to far forward, but overall I don't think it's bad.

Elk

Scratchboard - 1995/1996?

I don't do nearly enough on scratchboard. I love this medium, but you have to have the right subject and if you screw up to bad, your done because there's no going back.

This is an elk I did for school, I can't remember if it was Freshman or Sophomore year in High School.

Racoon

Pencil - 2006

This is a sketch of a racoon obviously, the lines and shading are good, but there is something wrong with it. I can nitpick it a part because I see at least three things while I stare at it, but I still like it enough to submit it here.

Jessica

Pencil - 2006

This is a drawing of my niece I did for a portfolio assignment, it is not without its flaws but I rather like how it turned out. If you can't tell, she's blowing a bubble.

I will have to dig out the original to fix it one of these days so this is more apparent.

Mosquito

Mosquito - 2008

This is a mosquito I did for a homework assignment, I went online and found a picture of an Aedes aegypti and sketched it. The skin of the person he's biting looks like crap, but it is hard to draw skin that zoomed in. And I wanted the focus to be the mosquito.

Fisher the Horse

Pencil colored in Photoshop - February 2008
So, this is Fisher the horse. I took an image of a horse and sketched out the lineart and went in and colored it, and this came out. Though it might be a bit wrong, because I think Fisher would actually be leggier then this.

Overall I like how it came out, better then earlier tries, but I think I'm going to go back in and do something else with the Background one of these days. It leaves something to be desired.

I think I'm going to try to do more computer photoshop manips in this manner.

Poptart

This is actually a drawing I did for a girl of her pet bunny Poptart. I'm not sure what kind of bunny he actually was, she just gave me a picture and I drew this.

I need to draw like this more often.

Iguana

I recently did this one out of sheer boredom. I just bought a set of Prismacolor pencils and I wanted to do something wiht them, so I found a picture of an Iguana and sketched it out at first. And then I put some color to it. The scan makes it look a little more purple then it actually is. But overall I like how it turned out.

Snowboarder

Sketch colored in Photoshop - Winter 2003

One of my aspiring photoshop illustration pieces, probably one of the better ones I've done, as progress can be seen, but by no means great. Inspiration is myself, though I'm not this good in real life, I aspire to be able to take the air on a snowboard but have yet to acquire this feat. And the image is that of a cat. The cat is based also on myself. If I were to be an anthropormorphic character, I would definitely be a cat. As I am independent and it was something I was obsessed with when I was three.

The tail was originally left out. Then somebody mentioned that the cat looks to need a tail. I didn't know how to put one in there, it felt odd. It still feels odd.

Silver

Sketch colored in Photoshop - Summer 2003

Silver, a member of a race of beings I created in 1996. They are a bit quirky and I've had people accuse me of creating a goat/dog/dragon hybrid race. Ok, so I did. So sue me.

Probably one of my more successful pieces in this respect. Still no background. Very much illustrative, not very artistic. Trying to learn more about how to make hair look like hair on a computer. Fun stuff.

Myra Revealed

Sketch colored in Photoshop - Fall 2003

So why is this in my art file? I'm not exactly sure, its definitely an illustration and not really all that great. But I guess its a sign of some of my early stuff.

This was actually done for my comic Creature, and I basically played around with this one. No background, something i need to work on (but I really do suck at backgrounds) but basically the jist behind this is this woman, Myra, keeps herself covered from head to toe. She's extremely beautiful and has an unusual look to her, so she tries to keep herself as inconspicious as possible. But when she needs kick some ass, she ain't afraid to try to rouse her opponents by intimidating them a bit.

I still have a lot of learning to do. This is far from great. I hope to look at this in the future and think 'man, that was pathetic, I'm so much better now.' But for now, I kind of like it. The staff turning into a sword feels a little weak however, and her stance kind of irks me too. But the thing here is working on the coloring.

Myra

Sketch colored in Photoshop - Spring 2003

This was a labor of time consuming love. I don't think it looks all THAT great, but I don't think it looks that bad. Just a lot of people look at this and think *gasp* You drew her NAKED!'

Yes, I did. But for crying out loud, its an illustration. This is Myra (aka Splash) turning from her human form into her unicorn form, complete with wings and all. The goal here was to go for the CGI look which I fairly accomplished. Now I have to work on my original sketch and blending to make it all flow better together.

One of the first real pieces I did that looked halfway decent in photoshop. I didn't have a flippen clue before this, and then I learned about a valuable thing called 'Multiply Mode', done in layers. It makes things so easy.

Money Rules the World

Paper Mosaic - 2003

In my Mixed Media class, one of the projects was a mosaic. Most people decided to do a Mosaic in the traditional sense.

I wasn't that smart.

I have a fascination for foreign money, and for this project, I decided I would combine the two. So I photocopied foreign money with my scanner, printed it out, cut it up, and pasted it to a map of the world. It was extremely time consuming. And it took me forever.

Unfortunately, unless I find a way to preserve it, I fear that this project will eventually fall apart, which is a shame, becuase the final results were very pleasing to me. Unfortunately, the picture doesn't do it justice.

Golden mean

Mixed Media - 2000

The assignment, glue various substances into the form of the golden mean. I decided to do mine in browns (or golds, whichever way you want to look at it). Its getting a bit roughed up as you can see. The granola has fallen off and some of the other pieces are clinging on to dear life.

The skulls are my favorite part, most of it was newspaper clippings, with some texture such as bark off of Aspen trees or crayon rubbings or what ever else. This was a rather fun assignment. My workmanship was a little shoddy however.

Dragon Shaker

Ceramic - 2001

So we had to make this little pinchpot. Then we put little beads inside so that it would make a sound when we shake it. Then we had to make it into something.

I made it into the one thing my pottery teacher loathes more then all. A dragon. Well sue me, I like dragons.

The tail has since broke. *sighs* My cursed luck.

No, this is not a work of art. Its just something I did for fun in my art class. I tend to do a lot of dragons in ceramics. It pisses the teacher off to no end too.

Foot Pot

Ceramic - 2001

This particular pot is not extremely artistically pleasing. In fact, it's rather thick and heavy for a pot. And I ruined the design by carving something like 'feet' into the side of it. I kick myself now for doing such a thing. In fact, if I were to do this pot over again, I would have left it alone and fired it pretty much right off the wheel.

This pot was thrown using only my feet. And what a splendid sensation it was too. And here is the page detailing the labors to produce such an item.

Self Portrait in the Manner of Egon Schiele

WaterColor, Spring 2003

This is my final assignment in Watercolor, and perhaps my most successful piece out of the class. Take an artist who worked in watercolor, write a report on their work, life and inspiration, and then mimic their work and do your own.

My artist of choice for this project was an Austrian artist known as Egon Schiele. He had a thing for nudes and the human figure, some of his work extremely erotic. And he fascinated me.

He did a lot of self portraits, often time they were of himself nude. So I did a self portrait in his style of myself. And I happen to like how it turned out.

It Tolls for Thee

Oil on Canvas - 3'x3', Fall 2002

This is one of my few experimentations with Oils, and probably my most successful one. It was done very quickly, one of those pieces where I really got into the mood of the piece. Yes, like most of my other paintings, it was an assignment. I had to take an object and blow it up, distort it in a way where it wasn't seen as it usually is. There's this antique bell at my parents house, probably stands seven inches high. I used that.

There is a little distortion in this painting. Some people have suggested that it makes it more interesting. It bugs other people. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Dodger

Oil on Canvas - 2002

I like horses. I was one of those typical preteen girls that drew nothing but horses. I have outgrown the phase but every once in a while I fall back on it. The assignment was a Baroque type technique, using severe contrasts, lights and darks with neutral colors. I chose to do a horse. My teacher didn't want me to do a horse, but I fought her and did one anyway. This horse has special signifigance to me. He was my first and likely my last horse, an Arabian Gelding named Dodger.

Blue

Acrylic on Canvas - 36"x48" - Spring 2003

This is part 2 of a series that I prefer to call 'the elements' of sorts. Its still unfinished, I need to make the fourth one, and the first one doesn't quite go with the other two. This one I labeled blue for the obvious, it's a monochromatic color scheme involving blue and more blue. The aura around it is a bit depressing, the figure is hunched over and appears a little down. It may have matched my mood at the time (I find painting to be very therapeutic.)

If I were to do this one over again, I would have given the piece more space at the feet and less space around the head, or shrunk it down a bit. But one of the things I like about this piece is its size. It's quite big, which forces me to move fast so I can cover the canvas quickly, which is a fun way to work! And that's the way I like it!

Brown

Acrylic on Canvas - 36"x48" - Spring 2003

This is part 1 of a series that I prefer to call 'the elements' of sorts. The motivation behind it was to take a huge canvas and cover it as quickly as possible. I also wanted to make it abstract, something I wasn't very comfortable with before hand. And I wanted to dwelve into a subject matter I've always been kind of queasy about.

Sex.

There are two figures in this painting. They have been reduced to shapes and relatively simplified. I think this painting is more powerful based on its sheer size. It's fairly large, and therefore, to me, it's interesting.

Asian Self Portrait / Shirakashiko

Acrylic on Canvas - 18"x36" - Fall 2002

This was a homework assignment for my acrylic painting class. I was required to take an asian fine artist and copy their style, meanwhile inserting my appearance into the painting. I came up with this painting, the original I copied it from was titled Shirakashiko. I do not know if that was the artist or the title of the piece but I've always liked this specific work. The only thing I have a problem with is that it appears I'm being skewered down the middle with my katana, which appears to have broken somewhere in the center. I'll probably take the opportunity to touch it up a bit in the future because the sword really does irk me. But otherwise, one of my favorite pieces. Even if I have myself dressed in pink.

Face

Linolium Print - 2003

A linolium print. The image is a self portrait, but for some reason, I didn't like how it turned out. I still have the matrix, maybe I'll play around with it later and see if I can tinker some more.

Jazz

Linolium Print - 2003

This is pure and utter randomness. There is no top or bottom. It just consists of me, a warm piece of linolium, an X-acto knife and a gouging tool. This was take two of this assignment, for some reason take one didn't go over to well for me.

Parrot

Woodcut Print - 2003

The inspiration to this was Suriname. Surinamese money has birds on it and one of the bills has this parrot. So I used that to come up with the design because I couldn't think of anything else honestly. My first woodcut, so its a bit rough, and gave me much blisters. Still, i like how it turned out.

Spontanuity

Collagraph Print - Winter 2003

This was my first actual print. I basically didn't try to go for any image and overloaded the matrix with all these different fabrics and textures and thingees. There was absolutely no planning or method to my madness.

I am so surprised how well this piece turned out considering the fact that I just shammed it. The photograph doesn't do it justice. If you see the actual print, it pops out at you. I want to get this sucker framed and then I will hang it on my wall.

Charcoal -2002

The paper was taped off into three parts and a composition was to be made with the remaining pieces. The fact that i focused on all but the face makes this piece successful to me. Also note the use of conte' crayon. It's a favorite tool of mine.

Charcoal -2002

Nude female, the face is not my favorite part. I also wish I was a little more liberal in applying the charcoal and made darker marks. My favorite part of this drawing is the near arm.

Nude Reclining

Charcoal - 2002

The face is a weakness, it looks somewhat cartoonish, but I really like the body on this piece. There are some things that I would have done differently now that I look back, like change the value contrast between the foreground and the background. But overall, one of my better pieces.

Kalsan

Pencil - 2000

This is inspired by a fan fic I wrote with the help of some other people (you know, those stories where everyone writes a character and plays off each other, kind of like roleplaying but not). Well, I wrote for this character that was an elf. She was probably a bit much, but I did enjoy writing her and I tried to explain her strange powers, but anyway, she was inspired by my halloween costume for 1999 (which, by the way, is the blame for me joining the army). I named her Kalsanilasa. The name has now become an alias of sorts.

This chick looks nothing like me. And she has very big lips. I didn't draw people very much before this point. This was done mostly from my mind, with a few pictorial references. One of those pictures was that of Jennifer Aniston.

Goat

Ink on Bristleboard- 1995

Another Freshman Art Assignment, this goat was one of my first trials with ink (I always just scribbled with pencil before) We were given an image out of this non-copyrighted book of images and told to reproduce them to get a feel for ink. This was my image.

I was such a little prude back then. I didn't want to draw the goat's genitilia area. Gimme a break. Now I draw just about everything.

Bug

Graphite on Bristleboard - 1995

Yes, its a bug. And one of my first art assignments when I was a freshman in highschool. I always liked this bug, though I've definitely gotten better in regards to my shading (the shadow kind of irks me here). I love bugs, and this is such a cute little bug.

Gryphon

PrismaColor Pencil on Matboard - 1995

I was highly influenced by the DragonLance Series (© Wizards of the Coast), and this is actually an image in one of the first three novels, I forget which. I was learning how to use colored pencils and was relishing in the smooth use of Prisma Color. I have a ton of these pencils now, however I don't do a whole lot with them in regards to coloring. Which really is a shame.

I love fantasy creatures. I do a lot of things with them, mainly because of the fact that they technically don't exist and so you have creative freedom when drawing them.

Horse Scratch

Scratchboard - 1998

The last time I did Scratchboard, and if I may say, a very successful outcome. I love this media, I don't do it nearly enough. I believe this is my third time using it was this image. Although I made the muscle on the leg a bit to large and makes that section of the image a little awkward, overall one of my favorite pieces I've ever done. Although it is a difficult medium to work with, I highly recommend it.

Graphite on Matboard - ~1997

I draw from pictures a lot. I swiped this sucker out of a national geographic. I have a lot of referance of animals from pictures (if you can't tell, I draw a lot of animals) and kind of doodled this one day. I liked the expression of the bear, kind of a non-chalant curious look on his face.

Sketchbook - 2002

These are some sketch studies of myself. If you knew me in real life, you would agree that they do look like me. This was right after I got my digital camera. I would take pictures of myself in various poses and sketch portions of my face. I loved how these came out.

KidStuff

Pencil - 1990-92

This is an example of the kind of art work I was doing circa age nine through eleven, they all came out of the same sketchbook that took me about two years to fill. I had a little case of cards that talked about all sorts of different animals and I would draw from those. So yeah, I had talent. But looking at this art work and how good I was then kind of disappoints me, because I should be better now.
